Spring Symposium- Jersey Apple Gathering
Saturday, February 24th, 2024
Ralston Cider Mill
336 Mendham Rd W, Mendham Township, NJ 07945
The Jersey Apple Gathering will bring together orchardists, cider makers, gardeners, and enthusiasts to discuss “Jersey Apple Histories and Futures” on Saturday February 24th at the Ralston Cider Mill for an afternoon of talks and tours. New Jersey has a rich history of apple growing and cider making, with a historical reputation for some of the best applejack and cider in the nation. But sometimes it is hard to imagine how important gardens and orchards were in the more highly developed landscapes of the Garden State. Join our event to hear talks about the historical importance of the apple in the New Jersey landscape, the remnant apple trees that fruit explorers are still finding hidden in suburban neighborhoods, and the ongoing work of Rutgers extension, farmers, and gardeners today to cultivate new orchards for the future.
Are you an apple enthusiast in New Jersey? Would you like to connect with others who love apples as much as you? Join our Jersey Apple Gathering for comradery, conversation, and activities that will inspire you for the coming growing season.
Featured Speakers
Fran McManus is a freelance writer and educator focused on the web of culinary, social, ecological, and economic relationships that deepen our experience—and love—of place. In 2009, apple historian Tom Burford encouraged her to research the history of the Harrison apple—a frustrating and gratifying search that she continues to this day. She applies that research in her work as a Cultural Strategist for Ironbound Farm and Ciderhouse.
Megan Muehlbauer is an Agricultural Extension Agent in Central New Jersey. She has been involved in tree fruit research for over 10 years. Her current programming includes tree fruit fertility management, apple cultivar evaluation, and hard cider apple production. In addition, she maintains several specialty crop research trials on hazelnuts, hops, wine grapes, and beach plums.
