New Directions in Folk Concert December 5, 2021 NBPAC
The New Jersey Folk Festival is excited to present our first in-person event since the pandemic: a fundraising winter concert at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center on Sunday December 5th at 3pm! Tickets are $20, and additional donations to support the New Jersey Folk Festival are welcomed. We cannot wait to kick off our 2021-2022 festival season!
New Directions in Folk will featured seasoned performers Spooky Handy and Pete McDonough, along with upcoming performers Paul Lewis and Yeimy Gamez Castillo! The winter concert will highlight our long commitment to presenting singer songwriters, while emphasizing music that gives voice to social justice issues and to musicians innovating traditional cultural genres for contemporary audiences.
COVID Protocols: Must show proof of vaccination via a vaccine card, or proof through NJ’s Docket App (which can be downloaded from the app store on your phone). If not vaccinated, you must present a Negative COVID-19 PCR test taken within 72 hours of the performance date.

Pete McDonough has been studying and performing acoustic blues for 50 years. His performances take listeners on a journey through the American tradition of acoustic blues, from the Piedmont to the Delta and include current approaches to fingerstyle blues. He participated in the production of Harlem Street Singer, an award-winning documentary about the music of Rev. Gary Davis, and wrote the biographies of 25 blues legends for The Complete Acoustic Blues Methodby Woody Mann.
Paul Lewis

Paul Lewis is a singer, songwriter, rapper, and producer from San Jose, California. He blends a wide array of musical influences together to make a unique and unforgettable sound. Paul currently attends Rutgers University with a major in Psychology and minor in Philosophy, and is involved in the spoken word group Verbal Mayhem. His newest singles “Reasons Yet Explained” and “Pieces Of My Mind” are available on Spotify, Apple Music, and Soundcloud here.

Yeimy Gamez Castillo is an artist and community activist based in Newark. She is a graduate research fellow at Rutgers Newark’s Newest Americans project and co-founder of ImVisible Newark, a community-based arts education project that empowers migrant and undocumented communities in New Jersey. She is also a co-executive producer and founder of the Healing Sounds of Newark at the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies.
Spook Handy

A staple of the New Jersey Folk Festival, Spook Handy is an American folk musician, specializing in the acoustic guitar and harmonica. He performed alongside Pete Seeger at festivals and concerts more than 50 times from 2003-2013. He now travels throughout the U.S. and Canada with his “Remembering Pete Seeger” World Tour, performing Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and original music written under Pete’s tutelage.
