People create relationships to their natural environment through the lens of culture. Our word “cultivation” has this relationship between culture and nature at its root. It describes the work of nurturing and shaping plants and animals into communities that meet our needs for food, beauty, and the stewardship of our habitats and homes. The New Jersey Folk Festival theme Garden State: Cultures of Cultivation explores the diverse cultural art forms and perspectives that shape our lives in gardens, farms, markets, and kitchens. egan with programs in 2023, continues as the theme of the 2024 festival, and will be ongoing.
