On the Move: Transport and Migration
The New Jersey Folk Festival’s 2021-2022 festival theme was “On the Move: Transportation and Migration”, which highlighted ideas of transportation, migration, and life in motion. These themes are uniquely central to the folklife of New Jersey, a transportation hub where one in five residents is an immigrant. The importance of being able to move freely was heightened during the pandemic as many people were confined to their homes for extended periods of time and our use of public transport has been hampered by shut-downs and fear of congregating.
As we turn towards in-person events again, the festival will continue to adapt. We will continue to hold smaller events and workshops leading up to our traditional festival presentation on Rutgers Day, April 30th. Stay tuned for more information on our series of events, which will highlight activists in walking and cycling groups, transportation infrastructure, and the music that has moved with new immigrant groups to our state.
